While watching Academy Award winner Jordan Peele’s “Us” I couldn’t help but to think that there is a great movie underneath the final offering that we the audience get to partake in. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an awful movie. Not by a long shot. There are choices made that are pitch perfect and add much needed gravitas to a somewhat muddled story.

The editing in the third act, key musical selections, and certain performances all work for the betterment of this movie. Fellow Academy Award winner, Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther), continues to showcase why she has an Oscar on her mantel as she turns in one of the best performances of the year so far. She holds nothing back playing the loving and nurturing mother as well as a tortured and tormented soul. She is the glue that holds this entire project together.
The main issue with “Us” is the run time. At 2 hours, there is just not enough time to tell this ambitious story. It causes the filmmakers to go super–duper exposition heavy in the third act as they attempt to bring the plot home and connect all the dots. That is where the movie suffers.

As I stated earlier, “Us” is far from a bad movie. It definitely deserves a watch if only because of the conversations that it is sure to spark. The fleshing out of this story was troublesome and steers the film from resounding masterpiece to being merely okay.
